Placements

A structured student placement scheme

Engineers

End of 1st year: International experience - minimum 6 weeks

This international experience is prepared in advance in terms of an intercultural approach and the expectations regarding the content of the report are fully defined. This is an individual review of each student’s experience and acts as a basis for reflection during the intercultural lessons the following term.

Following assessment, ECTS credits are awarded for this international experience.

End of 2nd year: Engineering student technical placement - minimum 8 weeks

Practical application with privileged trainee status allows students to come face to face with the realities of corporate life and become acquainted with companies’ material, economic and human requirements.

They put the knowledge acquired through the course into practice , transforming it into skills for use in tackling a technical subject to be examined under the supervision of their industrial mentor. This allows them to pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses in a situation in which they can still hesitate and turn to colleagues for advice. They grow both culturally and personally, as they assess their ability to develop within a production organisation, complete with its requirements and imperatives.

A report on this placement must be prepared and defended by students before their colleagues and research professors and is assessed by their supervisory tutor.

After evaluation, ECTS credits are awarded for this report.

3rd year: Final year project - minimum 6 months

This is a project generally entrusted to young engineers. Students demonstrate that they are capable of acting autonomously and tackling complex subjects in situations that can, at times, prove complex. The project involves a minimum 5-month placement with a company or laboratory either in France or abroad.

It is assessed by their industrial tutor. A report is drawn up and defended before their industrial and academic tutors: both the report and the presentation are marked.

ECTS credits are awarded for this project.

The final year project can involve the creation of a business for students with a creative idea. ITECH then helps them with the necessary procedures.

At the end of the engineering course, a scientific conference, Proj’ITECH, is held, at which the students present their final year projects, in the form of spoken presentations or posters, to their colleagues, permanent teaching staff and academics from the polymer graduate school, as well as industrialists. This represents an opportunity for them to see the diversity of the subjects, their potential for cross-disciplinary application or the new ideas they have brought to light.

For each placement, a placement agreement is signed by all three parties: the student, the company and the school.

1-year work placement

Students can, if they wish, complete a 1-year work placement with a company or foreign laboratory but are required to spend at least 6 months abroad. In fact, an extended stay outside France is always highly beneficial and leads students to thoroughly think through their career plan.

Specialist Masters

7-month professional thesis (March to September)

The specialisation course includes a compulsory company placement. Lasting between 27 and 32 weeks, it allows students to complete a personal project on a subject chosen by the company in collaboration with the school. One or more industrial mentors and a teaching mentor are involved in this project. It leads to the preparation of a thesis that is defended before a jury featuring both industrialists and teachers.
