The Rhône-Alpes region combines eight départements: Ain, Ardèche, Drôme, Isère, Loire, Rhône, Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Its capital is Lyon, which is also its largest city. It is France’s second biggest region in terms of surface area (after the Midi-Pyrénées), economy and population (after the Île-de-France). It is also ranked as the 6th biggest region in Europe.
Broadly speaking, the Rhône-Alpes Region represents 1/10 of France in terms of its economy, population and surface area.
Lyon is located in the south-east of France, on the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône Rivers.
Lyon stands on a geographical crossroads, to the North of the natural corridor of the Rhône valley (which stretches from Lyon to Marseille).
Historically, Lyon is an industrial city and therefore houses many petrochemical industries along the Saône and Rhône Rivers, in the so-called ‘chemistry corridor’.
Lyon is also the city with the second largest number of students in France, with three universities and many engineering schools.
In terms of its population, Lyon is the 3rd biggest city in France, with 472,305 inhabitants.
On the 8th December each year, people in Lyon light small lanterns in their windows in homage to the Virgin Mary then head out to walk through the town, which is lit up by thousands of small candles and brought to life by original events put on in every neighbourhood.
These light shows form a steadfast tradition in the life of the city and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
